untitled (cocciopesto) . 2018
untitled (cocciopesto) reflects on history, especially the italian one, and the fundamentally human act of its construction and destruction.
the work is composed of three tiles arranged in a larger imaginary square, the space left empty generates a fourth mental tile in a subtle way. each tile freely represents a historical period, like the components used for their manufacture. the potsherds embedded in the tiles were obtained through a construction and consequent destruction of three small earthenware works, each in turn referring to its respective era. the term cocciopesto derives from the conjunction of the two italian words coccio and pestare, respectively one of the primary components of the material and the technique used to obtain it. cocciopesto was (and still is) applied both as a floor, but also as a foundation of floors: a foundation of foundations. since the floor literally functions as a foundation for the human body, so do history and its fragments, even if manufactured, act as a foundation for the human condition. |
